Uplawmoor tile works
Detail from Plan of Tile Kiln, 1840
Other Mure of Caldwell projects in the area included a saw mill, lime works and coal pits.
Our investigations into the tile works continue.
Although tiles are associated with roofs, much of a tile works output may have been drainage materials. The eighteenth and early nineteenth century saw major agricultural improvement programmes, many of which depended on the introduction of effective drainage. The account shown below is for drainage materials at Little Highgate farm in 1860.
